While many people think of mancala as a game, it’s actually more of a mechanic. What you call “mancala” is likely just the set of rules you were taught, one of hundreds of variations passed down over centuries across the world.

Mancala is a classification of games where the main mechanic involves taking a group of “seeds” from one location and “sowing” them around the board, by dropping one into each location, then moving on to the next consecutive location to drop the next seed.

The goal is usually to capture the most seeds, either by sowing them into a specific location, of by placing your final seed in a required position to take other seeds off the board.
