climbing

Climbing games are a subset of trick-taking games. Rather than everyone playing a single card or tile, a person may lead a combination of several cards or tiles. Other players must then “beat” this combination, usually with the same number of cards/tiles. If unable to do so, they might be required to pass their turn or discard, depending on the game.

In some games, the trick might go around the table several times, with the first player having the opportunity to beat the current winning combination, then the second player, and so on. For such games, generally the trick ends when every player but the owner of the highest combination has passed in succession.

The winner of a climbing game might be the person who wins the most tricks, or the first to run out of cards, though some games have a point system for capturing specific things.
